Post-installation updates

Prior to installing any software on our operating system, we use SUSEWatcher to check for software updates, such as security patches, that we should install. When the system reboots after installation the login screen is displayed. Log in:

We're logged in and our default KDE desktop appears:

SUSEWatcher wakes up and changes its icon colour from green (nothing new) to RED! Red signifies that new security related updates are available; amber means non-security updates are available.

Click on Start Online Update to begin the process.

Root privileges are required so supply the root password.

Click on Next to use the default SUSE Online Update Server.

If the kernel has some security updates that need applying we will accept the recommended patches by clicking Accept to apply them.

For the kernel updates to take effect we must remember to reboot once we have finished!

The download and installation time will depend on the size and quantity of fixes to be applied.

Click on Finish - which is now lit as Patch download and installation is now complete.

The watcher icon changes to green - SUSEWatcher has been sated for the time-being!

Don't forget to reboot if a kernel patch has been applied. Now we are well positioned to install the required applications.
