Presentation Server - Software
Selecting and obtaining the operating system
The choice for us was not between Open Source Software (OSS) and proprietary software, but which OSS to choose. We opted for SUSE 10 with the KDE 3.4 desktop.
For an exposition of the debate surrounding OSS versus proprietary software please refer to the paper "Why Open Source Software'" by David A. Wheeler where he presents quantitative data in support of the argument that "in many cases using open source software / free software (abbreviated as OSS/FS, FLOSS, or FOSS) is a reasonable or even superior approach to using their proprietary competition according to various measures".
Obtaining SUSE 10
We had the SUSE 10 distribution on a single DVD and in the 5 CD format. The 64 bit version of the software, required by the Shuttle's 64 bit architecture, is only contained on the DVD, so this is what we used for our installation.
Requirements
To install the system you will need the following:
- SUSE 10.0 . Download the 5 CD iso images from openSUSE, or purchase a distribution of the software.
- access to an internet connection during install is very useful for upgrading and fine tuning, but is not essential as this can be done later if desired.
Server Setup - SUSE 10
This is a full description with screenshots (linked to fullsize images) covering the steps taken to setup a SUSE 10.0 based server that offers the services needed by the Presentation Server component of the Paradigm Digital repository (web server (SSL-capable), FTP server, database servers) and the Digital repository Software itself (Fedora and Dspace).
