Persistent identifiers

Persistent identifiers for a repository of digital archives and manuscripts

The persistent identification of digital objects is vital to the delivery of services associated with the preservation and access of digital archives. To implement an identifier scheme which meets the needs of this context repositories must understand what they expect of such a scheme as comprehensively as possible; only then can the suitability of the various identifier schemes on offer be assessed. Information about some of the most common schemes, such as ARK, DOI, Handle, PURL, URI, URL and URN is provided below; here an anlysis of the persistent identifier requirements for preserving and providing access to personal digital archives is presented.
