The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003

The Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations 2003 are an EC directive. They supersede the Telecommunications (Data Protection and Privacy) Regulations 1999 which gave effect to EU Directive 97/66/EC. The regulations impose rules on the use of telecommunications services with the aim of protecting 'fundamental rights and freedoms, and in particular the right to privacy, with respect to the processing of personal data in the telecommunications sector'.

The Information Commissioner's Office is responsible for enforcing the regulations.
