URN - Uniform Resource Name

URNs are persistent, location-independent resource identifiers with the capacity for incorporating many different identifier schemes. They identify a resource, but do not explicitly convey any information on how that resource might be accessed. e.g. the Request for Comments document “URN Syntax, RFC-2141” would be identified as urn:ietf:rfc:1738. URNs remain globally unique and persistent even when the resources they identify become unavailable or cease to exist. They are therefore a type of persistent identifier.
