Technology Watch

Technology Watch is the ongoing activity of monitoring relevant developments in information technology; in the context of a digital archive, this means those developments which might have a bearing on the long-term preservation of digital objects. Technology Watch plays an important part in managing a digital archive, and forms part of the 'Preservation Planning' function of an OAIS-compliant digital repository. It ensures that digital objects remain accessible over time and involves: keeping track of developments in hardware, media, software, file formats and standards, in order to assess the risk of obsolescence; inaugurating measures like migration when necessary; and monitoring the development of new emulators and migration tools.
