Tag

A tag is a machine-readable description which denotes that the text following the tag has a specific quality or meaning. Tags are encapsulated in angle brackets and always come in pairs. The first tag switches on the characteristic and the second tag, which always begins with a back slash, turns off the characteristic. For example, in EAD, the tag for encoding the date of a record is so a marked up date would look like this: <unitdate> 1984</unitdate>. Tags are the vital component of all encoding standards such EAD, METS, and Dublin Core.
