Rights Expression Language
Various Rights Expression Languages have been developed to express information about intellectual property rights which apply to digital objects, including: copyright status; contracts or license agreements to which digital material is subject; and any restrictions on access and/or use of the material. These have grown up in different contexts to serve different purposes; most useful for digital preservation are those which have the capacity to deal with copyright as well as licences. Some of these languages can be used in a digital repository for recording rights metadata, and they play an important part in digital rights management within the repository. Examples include METSRights, Open Digital Rights Language, and MPEG-21/5.
