Repository software

Different types of repository software have been developed to facilitate the creation and maintainenance of digital repositories, which are essentially collections of digital objects, e.g. digital libraries, institutional repositories, subject-based research resources, collections of learning objects, and digital archives. Functions of repository software generally include: storing digital objects; storing or creating metadata about digital objects; managing the relationships between objects; maintaining an audit trail of actions performed on objects; and facilitating access to the repository's content. Various open-source repository software systems exist; these vary in their capabilities and functionality, and some of them are more appropriate for dealing with the preservation of digital personal archives than others. Well-known examples of repository software include DSpace, Fedora and Eprints.
