Records management

The systematic control of records during the active and semi-current phases of the records life cycle, from creation to disposition. It is also the management process which ensures that evidence of the business activities and transactions of an organisation is documented. Traditionally records management has been applied only to institutional records, where records managers have some degree of control over the creation and use of records during their active life. However, in the digital environment, it will increasingly become necessary for archivists to provide records management advice to individuals, in order to ensure that records survive to become part of future personal archives.
