OSS - Open-source software

OSS is software for which the source code is available under a license, or in the public domain. This means that users can study, modify, improve and redistribute the software freely. Having legitimate access to source codes and file format specifications makes the work of digital curators easier, and records created using open-source formats are more likely to survive in the long term than those in closed, proprietary formats.
