Migration

Migration enables the transfer of digital objects from one hardware or software configuration to another, or from one generation of computer technology to another. Migration sometimes entails the loss of information, and successive migrations may result in the degradation of the original digital object. Migration might be a batch operation for some repositories (e.g. on a given date, all PDF 1.3 files are migrated to PDF 1.4) or digital objects could be migrated on demand (e.g. MS Word file is migrated to PDF to enable access for a user without access to MS Office). In order to make decisons about the migration process, we must decide which attributes of an object must be accessible in the migrated version(s).
