Metadata

Metadata is structured information about an object, a collection of objects, or a constituent part of an object. Different types of metadata support different digital archive functions. The main categories of metadata include administrative metadata, behaviour metadata, descriptive metadata, file inventory metadata, and structural metadata. Many of these categories overlap. Digital objects that are intended to endure for long periods of time require metadata that will support long-term preservation.
