Fonds

Fonds describes the highest level, or creator, of an archival description. The fonds ideally holds all the surviving records created by a person or organisation during the course of their existence. Occasionally a fonds may be split between institutions or indeed across countries. Standards for cataloguing and indexing terms permit such collections to be cross searched. Some institutions favour the less obscure term 'collection' to denote fonds.
