Glossary - F
File format
The format of a digital file is laid out in the format specification, which transforms a bitstream into something that makes sense to a user, by stipulating the proper encoding, sequence, arrangement, size and internal relationships which enable the construction of a valid file of the relevant type, e.g. a Microsoft Word 9 file.
