Data extraction
Even if digital archivists work closely with donors and depositors over time and offer advice on digital records management, they can still expect to receive some archives only at the end of the creator's life or after their death. Such archives might contain obscure and obsolete file formats, stored on old media. Data extraction is the process of extracting content from legacy systems like this. It is usually carried out using specially designed tools and software.
