Closed records

In the context of an archive repository, closed records are those which are not made accessible to users. There are various reasons for this: closures may have been imposed on particular records by the donor or depositor of an archive; other records may be closed by the archivist for copyright reasons, or because they contain sensitive personal data about living people (as defined by the Data Protection Act). Closures will usually be made for a finite period of time, e.g. until the death of an individual or the expiration of copyright. The majority of the material found in personal digital archives is likely to be closed to users for many years after acquisition.
