Glossary - A

Archive service

An archive service is an organisation, or subdivision of a larger organisation, devoted to acquiring and preserving archives, making them accessible to users, and promoting them to potential users, within the dictates of institutional policies, relevant legislation and good archival practice. The users of an archive service may be the general public, or they may be drawn from a specific community. Some archive services are attached to an institution such as a business, and only acquire the records of that institution. Most other archive services have a collecting policy, which sets parameters for their acquisition activities, e.g. they may take in archives representing a particular geographical or subject area.
