Constructing family names using NCA Rules
Family names are composed of:
- Family name
- Epithet 'family'
- Title or occupation
- Territorial designation
Family name
Mandatory. Use the rules governing the contruction of personal surnames.
Epithet 'family'
Mandatory.
Title or occupation
Mandatory where applicable. Use the rules governing titles of personal names.
Territorial designation
Optional. Commonly used to distinguish from other families bearing the same name.
Examples
Leigh family . Adlestrop
Milner family . Baronets Nun Appleton
Spencer-Churchill family . Dukes of Marlborough Blenheim
Villiers family . Earls of Clarendon
Note: for consistency amongst repositories, it is advisable to check the entry in the National Register of Archives before constructing new personal, family and corporate names.
